Based on a combination of field explorations, morphological characters and molecular studies, a large sized Fejervarya species new to science is described using an integrated taxonomic approach. Here, the new species is diagnosed on the basis of distinctness in morphology, genetic distance and geography. The new species is assignable to the Fejervarya nilagirica morphological group. In addition, taxonomic problems among the congeners of Fejervarya in the Western Ghats are discussed. Finally, we describe the pattern of species representations of different morphological group in the Goa landscape.Keywords

The Dicroglossidae frogs of genus Fejervarya Bolkay, 1915 are morphologically cryptic and represented by one of the widespread group of frogs across the tropical Asia comprising about 45 species. Being morphologically cryptic, taxonomic status for many of the species remains uncertain. Recent studies using integrative taxonomic approach have revealed the existence of many novel and hitherto undescribed species. Herewith, we describe two new species of Fejervarya viz. Fejervarya kalinga sp. nov. and Fejervarya krishnan sp. nov. from peninsular India having morphological and phylogenetic distinctness. Detailed morphological descriptions and comparisons with the known congeners along with their systematic relationship inferred from phylogenetic analyses are presented herein. Taxonomic problems within the genus for the peninsular India and the pattern of phylogenetic relationships are also presented.Keywords

Members of the genus Sphaerotheca are known to have the distribution in the low to mid elevation landscapes of South Asia. Most of the descriptions are either from homestead areas or from agro ecosystems except for a couple of species described from the mid elevated forest areas. The taxonomic uncertainties prevalent in the group was attended very recently, limiting the descriptions of five species to India, two species to Nepal and one each to Pakistan and Sri Lanka (one undescribed species from Myanmar). Here a new species assignable to the morphological 'Breviceps group' is described from the agro ecosystems of Jharkhand based on a combination of morphological, phylogenetic and geographical studies using integrated taxonomic approach. Besides, the distribution status of Sphaerotheca pashchima is discussed and the possibility of a new species occurring in Myanmar is pointed out.Keywords

The dicroglossid frog Nanorana conaensis was described from the high elevation mountain ranges of Tibet about three decades ago. Recently this species was reported from India as a first record for India. The Karaavali skittering frog, Euphlyctis karaavali was described in 2016 from the western coastal plains of Karnataka, India with the IUCN Red list conservation status as ‘Endangered’. In the present account, species distribution boundaries has been re-defined based on the field sampling and museum collections. On account of the present studies, IUCN Red list conservation status for the species is proposed as ‘Near Threatened’. Discussions have been made on the morphological crypticity prevailing in the genus and the species complex E. cyanophlyctis since two centuries. Premature proposal of Red list conservation status during the new species descriptions and their implications on the biodiversity documentation studies are reviewed.Keywords
